Nahko & Medicine for the People

My newest source of inspiration is a musician who happens to have been born and raised in Portland, but has spent the past many years living in Hilo, Hawaii. Nahko Bear sings from his soul, speaking his truth and emanating his passion in a way that keeps me connected to my inner power and what is possible for us in the world.

Gettin' some up-close Aussie Medicine from the 12-string guitarist after the show in Eugene

As I listen to hours and hours of Nahko, as my own source of Medicine, I'm finding that I really love having the lyrics at my finger tips. Somehow, taking the words in with my eyes does something for me and my being that listening doesn't. I love the idea of being able to share them with my friends, my coaching clients, and now, with anyone who may be seeking as I was. Many of them are already on the internet, written out traditionally as song lyrics are. Many of them were written out on Barbie Montana's YouTube site (thank you, Barbie!), on videos that she created of many of his songs. Some, however, were not yet to be found, and thus, the birth of my idea to share them here.

I share these lyrics here with absolutely no copyright infringement intended, and encourage you to share them far and wide, in support of the world that we have, and the one that we know is possible. This really is 'medicine for the people', and needs to be shared around the world.

Surely, being human, there may be errors. Feel free to leave me a comment and I'll do my best to improve.

Budding Trees
The body talks and meditation helps
— Nahko Bear

Lyrics by Nahko & Medicine for the People

In the moon of the budding trees
I was gifted new eyes to see
All of the shifting shape and ways you can be
Wake the dreams into realities
Wake the dreams into realities

Sunset diamonds trickle down our cheeks
The language of no words is how we speak
Pacha Mama spinning firelight
and a Little Bear singing by the fireside
Out of this city with the wind on our neck
That’s us whistling upon your neck
Moonlit diamonds sparkle into my mouth
Feels like hunger and it tastes like salt
Feels like hunger and it tastes like salt

So, tap me out and tap me into you
Heal my brain and my body too
Balance my chemistry hydrate these cells
Cuz the body talks and meditation helps
The body talks and meditation helps
The body talks and meditation helps

A little bit of cinnamon pours as we snoot
All up on my shit in the morning commute.
Coastal quiver on a quest through the dunes
Sandy toes and bottomless curves of the moon
Heavy lifting for Pele’s children
Hand of the goddess soaking cliffs keep building
Plate is full but appetite has dwindled
I feel a little sick so I keep the fire kindled

You the pillar steadfast light of bravery
And I the dimly burning candle still shaking
Riddled fear quiver my bones so easy!
Well, you’re the guru now so visualize healing
Yeah, you’re the guru now so visualize leaving.

Let her go for she can no longer feed you
And many children need that mana creature
Just barely missed you I was finally ready!
But you are a long gone too much heavy history
Yeah you are a long gone too much heavy history
Let go of blame, that shit will never serve me!
Bless other men, investigate your mystery

So, tap me out and tap me into you
Heal my brain and my body too
Balance my chemistry hydrate these cells
Cuz the body talks and the meditation helps
The body talks and meditation helps
The body talks and meditation helps

Little spider weaves a wispy web
And stumbling through the woods it catches to my head
She crawls behind my ear and whispers secrets
Dragonfly wiz by and sings now teach it
Yeah, dragonfly wiz by and sings now teach it
Form on the trail I watch you head up mauka
I turn makai and whisper, “thank you sister”
Edge of the west where water touches land

You are the east with folded maps in hand
Time to increase my frequency!
Hands of light and bodies talking
Gimme some of that wild fox medicine!
But, keep me here in this wild present tense
Fully supported on new lovers chest
Dawning adventures sparkle get some rest!
Dawning adventures sparkle get some rest!

So, tap me out and tap me into you
Heal my brain and my body too
Balance my chemistry hydrate these cells
Cuz the body talks and the meditation helps
The body talks and meditation helps
The body talks and meditation helps

Great Spirit

Mindful, stay mindful
— -Nahko Bear

Lyrics by Nahko & Medicine for the People

Great Spirit, I have had it
Bring me back to the nomadic
Way of weaving through the damage
Mindful, stay mindful

Great Spirit, for my sisters
Let me be a flowing river
Flood the banks, the rocks that bind her
Carry, I'll carry

Great, Great Spirit
Great, Great Spirit

Great Spirit, for my brothers
Let me be a mountain under
Which he climbs to discover his process
Now that's progress

Great Spirit, All that hinders
Tie reminders to my fingers
I must speak with you more often

Great, Great Spirit
Great, Great Spirit

Great Spirit, for my relations
Give them strength to face racism
In every single situation
Easy now, go on speak loud

Great Spirit, Take me Instead
Guide me down the road of red
Tunkashila, I am saying, praying,

Great, Great Spirit
Great, Great Spirit
Tunkashila (grandfather)
Tunkashila
Tunkashila
Tunkashila

Great Spirit, just don't collapse
Nothing but the earth will last
And I'll be singing sweetly into the darkness
Now hark this

Great spirit on my tongue,
Be still, be still
The time will come when everyone will sing
All life is sacred,
While I'm waiting
Great spirit, my fist is up
Bringing the power to the people, you're reflection of us
Some of your people can't hear it, the cries of the earth
Some of your people can't feel it, the way that it hurts
And it hurts, Great Spirit
And it moves, Great Spirit
Interconnected in the wreckage of a paradigm on its way out
Its way out
Speakin' a spiritual lyrical testimony
The spirit that did resist weavin' around false prophesies
Spirit directed and selected with the message I bring
While the ship slowly sinks I've been directed to sing
I'm like a wreckin' ball breakin' down the walls of the past
A minimalist livin' on bliss with the last of my cash
You're gonna be justified with how you treated the land
You're gonna be by my side when I stand and demand a change

Tunkashila
Tunkashila
Tunkashila
Tunkashila

Great, Great Spirit
Great, Great Spirit
Tunkashila

I Mua

The less I speak, the more I know
— -Nahko Bear

Lyrics by Nahko & Medicine for the People

I will go to the volcano, melt my heart in Mauna kea snow
I will go to the volcano, melt my heart in Mauna kea snow

Get waist deep yet get barrelled
All the gifts returned tenfold
I will go to the volcano
I will go to the volcano
Melt my heart in Mauna Kea snow

Hell, good thing I don't require much
Makes it easier to move and stand straight up
A little tough love and the gentle touch
The more I struggle, the more I'm stuck
The less I speak, the more I know
The faster I move, the slower I go

I will go to the volcano, melt my heart in Mauna Kea snow

I'll water my horses like you taught me to (echo)
Spirit guides, yeah, the spirit moves (echo)
I'll water my horses like you taught me to (echo)
Spirit guides, yeah, the spirit moves (echo)

Your hair like sweetgrass braided through
We stay busy, we always do
My developing state of consciousness
Endless roads to nothingness
And cities filled with emptiness
Crowds of faceless ignorance
I'm over it, I'm over it
Pull up my anchor, sail my ship
Countless ways to feed my kids
Countless ways to route my trip
I'll harvest this and replant it
Harvest this and replant it

Like when the mother, met the father
kissed the horizon, and gave birth to stars
Or when the lovers, turned into thunder
Then came the breakthroughs, then came the storm

I'll keep travelin 'til my heart finds peace
But even when it does, I'll keep moving
'Cuz there's so much to see
Ground beneath bare feet
I love the darklit loneliness
My greatest teacher, peacefulness
The wolf I bear the forest with
The ever present kiss of mindfulness
Compassion wets my every step
Well, the puddle shimmer and reflect
And I hold my shield up, must protect
Well, a suffered heart suffered neglect

Initiate this son of god, initiate this daughter of god
Make us work and feel each part (echo)
Initiate this son of god, initiate this daughter of god
Make us work and feel each part (echo)

Nurturing my jurassic heart
Galaxies in these birth marks
Initiate my father, god
Let him die, let him move on
Initiate my mother, god
Let her live, forever strong

Aho

Like when the mother, met the father
Kissed the horizon, and gave birth to stars
Or when the lovers, turned into thunder
Then came the breakthroughs, then came the storm
Then came the storm

What a beautiful life, looking through these eyes
What a beautiful life, dreaming with this mind
Without the lens of mankind, without the crutch of my sight
I can pierce through the night, surrendering to the most high
I can reach to the heights
I and I and I and I

What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)
What a beautiful life (echo)

What a beautiful life (oh yeah)
What a beautiful life (oh yeah)
What a beautiful life (oh yeah)
What a beautiful life (oh yeah)

What a beautiful life
What a beautiful life

What a beautiful life.

Manifesto

Don’t waste your hate...rather gather and create...
— -Nahko Bear

Lyrics by Nahko & Medicine for the People

Well this is real talk
This is non-stop
It is looped now tongue and mind.
Played off the sidewalk,
Straight to your boombox,
How it travels from ear to memory.
Well, this is medicine,
There's a message with in,
And each will find it in their own time.

Well, this is music
This is how I use it
It makes you move and move in movement
This is how I focus
Knowin' it's not hopeless
But it sure starts with me and ends on a whole note
Musical medicine, this is my healin'
For past and present things to come

I see people stressin' over space and possessions
Out of fear and a need for visual aides of our abundance
Give me examples or something tanglble
Something I can get my hands on and find real meaning
Where is the medicine
Well, I've been searchin'
Well, I suppose each will find their own kind

Well, everything is at stake
It makes it hard concentrate
And there are men who see a war and see a paycheck
Such different programming to live so fearfully
Terror this and terror that, terrible reality
There is no medicine on the television
So, turn it off and turn yourself around

And let's just face it
The world's fuckin' racist
Even the most peaceful of us gets caught in the trend
To live cohesively is almost a fantasy
And we oughta know it starts with humbling our egos
What is the medicine for cultural woundin'
Has its moments, has its melodies, has its time

Well,I was listenin',
To the outgoing seasons
About climate change and some of the reasons,
When the sky opened, like I'd been hope'n
And there came horses by the thousands
And there was thunder on their tongues
And lightning on their minds
And they were singin' this old melody
From some other time

They sang don't waste your h - at  - e.
Rather gather and  cr - ea  - te
Be of service, be a sensible person
Use your words and don't be nervous
You can do this, you've got purpose
Find your medicine and use it.

They sang don't waste your H - at  - e.
Rather gather and cr - ea  - te
Be a service, be a sensible person
Use your words and don't be nervous
You can do this you've got purpose
Find your medicine and use it

Aloha Ke Akua

...and if you wish to survive, you will find the guide inside...
— Nahko Bear

Lyrics by Nahko & Medicine for the People

Lend your ears, lend your hands,
Lend your movement, anything you can.
Come to teach, come to be taught.
Come in the likeness in the image of God.
Cause, you can be like that.
With all that humbleness, and all that respect.

All of the power invested in me,
be it hard to love my enemies.
All of the black bags over the heads of the dead and dying.

The more I understand about the human race,
the less I comprehend about our purpose and place
and maybe if there was a clearer line
the curiosity would satisfy.

Time-based prophecies that kept me from living,
in the moment I am struggling
to trust the divinity of all the gods
and what the hell they have planned for us.

I cry for the creatures who get left behind
but everything will change in a blink of an eye
and if you wish to survive,
you will find the guide inside.

I go back and forth every single day,
the clarity that comes to me in a choppy way,
as the feelings and the places
and the seasons change,
the galaxies remain.

Energy fields cone the body in space.
The angels that are coming from a spiritual waste.
The hate that gets me distant from my spiritual pace.
Ten fold the manna when the planets are in place, in polar alignment.
We're on assignment.
Bodies on consignment.
Return them to the circus.

And what is the purpose?
What is the purpose and would you believe it?
Would you believe it
if you knew what you were for
and how you became so informed?

Bodies of info performing such miracles.
I am a miracle made up of particles
and in this existence,
I'll stay persistent,
and I'll make a difference
and I will have lived it.

Aloha, Aloha Ke Akua, Ke Akua,
Aloha, Aloha, Kuleana, Kuleana.
Aloha, Aloha Ke Akua, Ke Akua,
Aloha, Aloha, Kuleana, Kuleana.

Each day that I wake,
I will praise, I will praise.
Each day that I wake,
I give thanks, I give thanks.
Each day that I wake,
I will praise, I will praise.
Each day that I wake,
I give thanks, I give thanks.

And the day that I don't wake up
and transcend the holy make-up,
I am capable, I am powerful.
And the day that I don't wake up
and transcend the holy makeup,
I am on my way to a different place....

I'm not a leader, just a creature,
seeking the features of a teacher.
Whether you follow or whether you lead
All mysterious ways of nature and I'm into it.
Changing management.

And there are various ways to conquer this monotonous metropolis,
my stubbornness is bottomless,
my fearlessness is talking shit
and I'm wide awake and I'm taking names.

I am not a leader, just a creature.
Seeking the features of a teacher.
Whether you follow or whether you lead
All mysterious ways of nature and I'm into it.
I'm into it.
Changing management.

And there are various ways to conquer this monotonous metropolis,
my stubbornness is bottomless,
my fearlessness is talking shit
and I am wide awake.
And I'm taking names.

And there are various ways to conquer this monotonous metropolis,
my stubbornness is bottomless,
my fearlessness is talking shit,
and I'm wide awake and I'm taking names.

Do you speak to me like you speak to God?
All of the love and understanding between the father and the son?
Do you believe in the perfectness of where you are?
These are my people, these are my children,
this is the land that I would fight for.

My solidarity is telling me to patiently
be moving the musical medicine around the planet in a hurry,
Cuz there's no time to waste.
Got to wake up the people time to stand up and say,
we know what we are for
and how we became so informed.
Bodies of info, performing such miracles.
I am a miracle, made up of particles
and in this existence,
I'll stay persistent, and I'll make a difference
and I will have lived it. ........

Aloha, Aloha Ke Akua, Ke Akua,
Aloha, Aloha, Kuleana, Kuleana.
Aloha, Aloha Ke Akua, Ke Akua,
Aloha, Aloha, Kuleana, Kuleana.

Each day that I wake,
I will praise, I will praise.
Each day that I wake,
I give thanks, I give thanks.
Each day that I wake,
I will praise, I will praise.
Each day that I wake,
I give thanks, I give thanks.

And the day that I don't wake up
and transcend the holy make-up,
I am capable, Hm that's right,
I am powerful.

And the day that I don't wake up and transcend the holy make-up,
I am on my way to a different place!

Aloha, Aloha Ke Akua, Ke Akua,
Aloha, Aloha, Kuleana, Kuleana.
Aloha, Aloha Ke Akua, Ke Akua,
Aloha, Aloha, Kuleana, Kuleana.

I’m powerful and I’m not afraid no more...
— Nahko

Lyrics & Music by Medicine for the People

I see God in the darkest things
In the quiet of night,
I hear villages sing.
"There's a demon in that dragon,
purge it out." (2x)

In my second third world on a motorbike,
I learned a waking prayer so I could sleep at night
And I took my chances and realized many dreams
Yeah I took my chances and realized many dreams.

Wild dogs tumblin' in long rice fields
And I said to Hanuman, "Take away my shields."
You are loud and reckless, this is how I play
You are loud and reckless, that's no way to play

Oh, I fear nothing
No thing fears me
Justice has different hats for different days
Please release my anger
love thy neighbor
Put that pain to some good use anyway

Ohhh-o yeahhh
Ohhh-o yeahhh
Ohhh-o yeahhh
Oh oh oh
I will do things I've never done bfore
'Cause I'm powerful and I'm not afraid no more!

I feel God in the slightest wind
At the rate I manifest,
Every dream deepens
And I know I never want to stay the same
Yeah I know I never want to stay the same

On a day of silence, while the island slept
I cast my demons out at the feet of Ganesh
Said, "Remove the obstacles bravely with grace."
Said, "Remove the obstacles bravely with grace."

In past life, I cut throats and scalps
And in this life, I mend the wounds I delt
Maybe by my hands or by my words alone
Maybe by my hands or by my words alone!

Oh, I fear nothing
No thing fears me
Justice has different hats for different days
Please release my anger
love thy neighbor
Put that pain to some good use anyway

Teach me honor
Must remember
Don't be selfish with all your love anyway

I tilt my head back
Howl like you said
In the end, my body's spirit anyway
In the end, my body's spirit anyway!

Ohhh-o yeahhh
Ohhh-o yeahhh
Ohhh-o yeahhh
Oh oh oh
I will do things I've never done before
'Cause I'm powerful and I'm not afraid no more!
